| Chilgok, the urban and rural compound city, is located at the southwestern part of North Gyeongsang Province and sharing boundaries with Gunwi eastward, Seongju westward, Daegu Metropolitan southward, and Gimcheon as well as Gumi northward. As of December, 2005, its population is 110,388 with 40,385 households. The total land size of Chilgok accounts for 450.9§´, which corresponds to about 16.9% of whole land size of North Gyeongsang Province's 19,026§´. The Chilgok land consists of 67%of forestland, whereas the land for farming is only 18% and others as 15%. It consists of 3 towns and 5 subcounties.

The mainstream of Nakdong River flows through western Chilgok from north to south and the highest elevations in the northwest and the lowest in the southeast. The tributaries of the Rivers Gyeongho, Seowon, Dooman, and Han flow into the region creating a small floodplain. Agriculture and industries were developed around Nakdong River and the water of Nakdong River has been used for agricultural water and people take its valley as the grounds of living.
The climate of Chilgok represents the inland climate with four clearly distinguished seasons. The annual average temperature is 14.2 ¡É and the temperature range is highly variable, the hottest being 26.7¡É in July and the coldest averaging around 0.7¡É in January. Annual average precipitation amounts to 834.3mm. The most precipitation is shown in the summer, when the northern Pacific Ocean appears, while the lowest precipitation appears in winter.
Two Expressways (Gyeongbu, Jongang) and one Railway (Gyeongbu) through Chilgok give fast and comfortable transportation to anywhere in Korea. The county functions partially as a bed town of Daegu and Gumi, the neighboring cities. Especially, because both of the Yeognam region¡¯s Inland Freight Terminal and the distribution center of Hyundai Motors will be constructed in the foreseeable future, Chilgok will function as the strategic logistic base of Yeongnam Area.
As of December 2005, the number of companies registered in Chilgok was 7,203 with 43,061 employees. Recently, considering the Chilgok¡¯s location between Daegu and Gumi, the industries of textile and electronic components are developeing dramatically. Also, with the activation of Gyeongbuk High Tech Village in full swing, Chilgok accommodate more companies of state-of-the-art technologies including ICT and Bio/Nano Industries. In 2006 alone, Chilgok¡¯s trade volume reached US$560 Million with US$372Million in export, and US$188Million in import.
Chilgok is so full of beautiful attractions that the entire town is a recognized tourist destination with Mt. Kasan, Kumohdongchon, and Tobongsa Temple. Especially, Chilgok, where the Catholic Church was established earlier than other region in Korea, thus suffered severe persecution, holds a wide range of Catholic-related cultural relics including Hanti Martyrdom Holy place and Shinnmaugol Holy place.
